Capt Heaton is Assistant Professor of Air and Space Studies (APAS), Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps, Detachment 550, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In this capacity, Capt Heaton recruits, trains, motivates and counsels highly-qualified young men and women as prospective Air Force officers.

Capt Heaton is a native of Sandy, UT. He entered active duty in 2007 after graduating from Utah State University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, emphasis in aerospace. Capt Heaton’s first assignment was to AFRL’s Propulsion Directorate at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. He worked as the Ops Officer for Research Cell 18, a multi-million dollar SCRAM jet engine test facility. In this capacity he organized and assisted in the execution of test plans supporting a wide variety of hypersonic propulsion research programs to include the X-51A Hypersonic Propulsion Demonstrator Program. He also worked to update the DAQ (data acquisition) system of the research cell making real time diagnostics a reality. After 2 years in this capacity, Capt Heaton transitioned to the sister branch in the Aerospace Propulsion Division to be Deputy Branch Chief. In this position he mentored junior division personnel, tracked a $10M per year R&D budget, managed two Small Business Innovative Research programs on hypersonic combustion, and organized countless meetings and briefings for division staff.
